#1 What is the difference between the enLux 415nm and the Hybrid?
The 415nm contains 415nm blue LEDs only. The Hybrid contains both 415nm Blue LEDs and 630nm Red LEDs. The curve for the bulb shows the two peaks, one at 415nm, and one at 630nm. View curve. Both colors shine independently, but simultaneously from the Hybrid bulb. When the red and blue light shining together reaches your eye, it looks pink.
#2 Should I buy the Hybrid or the Red and Blue separately?
The Hybrid is the most popular choice for most people with mild-moderate inflamatory acne. However, you may want to buy blue and red separately if
You are treating moderate to severe inflammatory acne or cystic acne.
A dermatolgist's blue light treatment has already worked for you.
You want the same light you've read about on acne.org or elsewhere.
You want to explore light therapy and use Red light separately for a host of other healing and therapeutic benefits.
Intensity of the 415nm is rated at 2000mw. We do not yet have the physical measurements
of intensity that many people are using to compare
the products out there, such as uwatts/cm2, joules/cm2
and lumens. We will have these measurements taken
by an independent lab in the near future. In
the meantime, consider this: the treatment distance
for most other in-home "acne lights" is
6 inches from the light. The effective
treatment distance for these lights is up to
36 inches from the light. The image to the right shows a 415nm Hybrid (1/2 red, 1/2 blue) in a Travel Clamp Lamp at a distance of about 2 feet away. The flash is blocked to show the coverage and intensity of the light.
Aaron's Law of Physiology states, "Mild stimuli will excite physiological action; moderate stimuli will favor it, but strong ones will retard the action or abolish it altogether. " In other words, more is not better, light treatment should always be as gentle as possible."
So why does it matter that our lights are more intense than the competition?
A more intense blue light will not penetrate the skin deeper, but it will allow for a an effective treatment of a greater area from a further distance away.
1. This allows you to carry on with things such as reading or working at your computer during your treatments as the light is between 24 and 36 inches away, instead of having to keep your face 6 inches from a light.
2. At the greater distance, the light will spread to reach a greater amount of your skin, allowing for effective treatment of a larger area. This is important when treating body acne such as back acne.
How many LEDs are in these bulbs?
There are approximately 40-46 leds
on the 415nm light engine.
What is the difference between 120
and 220 Volt bulbs?
Different countries have different
electrical output from the wall sockets in their
homes and businesses. Here in the U.S. it's 120
volts. In Europe, it's 220 volts. If you don't
know what voltage to choose, you may consult
this map or
this list(scroll
down for list).
Why are your lights less expensive than the competition?
Our mission is to provide effective light therapy at an affordable price. In order to achieve that goal, we have searched for the highest quality, ‘off-the-shelf’ LED solution that is customizable to necessary therapy wavelengths. (peak 415nm) Since we did not have to spend money to have a special lamp designed, there is no additional cost for you.
How does the light work to help clear up acne?
Blue Light:
P. acnes, the bacterial responsible for causing
acne inflammation, pumps out tiny molecules called
porphyrins. When those porphyrin are exposed
to certain wavelengths of light (blue), they
produce free radicals that kill the bacteria
that causes inflammatory acne. Red Light:
Red light has an anti-inflammatory and healing
effect on the skin. In fact, research done by David
Olszewski, co- author of the book "Light Years
Ahead" has shown that skin heals almost 200% faster
when exposed to red light.
No. Due to the nature of acne, it cannot yet be cured, but only treated. Blue light won’t impact your hormones or the other factors that actually cause the bacteria to be there in the first place. Blue light is different from other acne treatments as the light is capable of penetrating beneath the skin, killing acne bacteria before it has a chance to cause visible acne.
Blue light acne treatments are easy to apply as a regular part of your ongoing acne treatment regimen, just like good hygiene and proper nutrition. The number of regular treatments you’ll need per month will depend on your skin type and condition, but it won’t take you long to discover the perfect balance to stay ahead of your breakouts and keep your skin clear.
What about using ALA or Levulan in conjunction with blue light? (PDT or Photodynamic Therapy.)
ALA or Levulan is not necessary for effective blue light acne treatment. This website promotes the natural, non-invasive use of blue light. Our lights are not to be used with ALA, Levulan or any other related topical application. You may want to consider PDT at your dermatologist's office for severe cases of acne that do not respond to blue light alone.
Will light therapy work for me?
Blue and Red light therapy is effective for
about 86% of people, so there is a very good chance it will work for you, too.
What kind of results can I expect?
Results vary by individual. You
should start to notice results within the first
2 weeks of consistent treatment. After
4 weeks of consistent treatment most people notice
about 60% reduction in visible acne. After 12
weeks those participating in the original
research experienced clearing of about 76%. Many
people do experience total clearing at or after
8 weeks of consistent treatment.
Will my acne get worse before it gets better?
The majority of people using light therapy do not report that their acne worsens before it improves, though there has been the occasional instance. No research or clinical study has reported any evidence that acne gets worse before it gets better.
The key is to properly follow the directions provided for acne light therapy, just as you should for any other health therapy. The directions that come with the acne light are designed specifically to prevent acne from getting worse at any time, and to ensure the most rapid improvement. At first, you are encouraged to start slowly, so that you can gauge your skin’s unique response to the light and create your own tailored weekly treatment regimen. (Preview Instructions.)
How do I use these lights for
acne treatment ?
First things First
Always position the light between 24 and 36 inches from the skin. Do not sit closer than 24 inches from the light. (Red, Blue or Hybrid)
Do not look directly into the bulb.
Protective eyewear has been provided and is required to be worn during light therapy. If the provided glasses cover too much of your face, you can use tanning goggles, your everyday sunglasses, or just keep your eyes closed during treatments.
Wash the face or affected area with a non-medicated cleanser of your choice. Wait 15 minutes or so after washing your face before starting your light therapy.
Getting Started
Although you are likely eager to get rid of your acne as soon as possible, itis important to start your light therapy slowly. This will let your skin adjust to the light, and also give your body time to clear away the toxins (dead acne bacteria) that result.
Begin by using the 415nm Blue or Hybrid light for 5 minutes, then skip the next day.
As your skin responds well to this, increase your next treatment to 10 minutes, and skip the next day.
As your skin responds well to this, increase your next treatment to 15 minutes.
Getting Clear
Continue with 15-minute treatments every other day.
You should begin to notice gradual, consistent improvement.
You can then try 10-15 minute daily sessions.
If at any time your condition worsens instead of improves, the solution is LESS light, not more. For example, if your skin is responding well to 10-minute sessions every other day, then you try daily treatments and it starts to get worse, immediately go back to every other day. If your acne has not improved within 4 weeks of consistent treatment, please contact us so that we can help you.
Red Light
If you are using Red light separately for acne treatment, add it to your regimen after your skin is responding well to blue. Start with 5 minutes daily and gradually increase to 20 minutes daily. It is best to use Red light in the morning, because it will have an overall stimulating effect on you.
Staying Clear
After the acne is cleared, begin to decrease your treatments gradually in the same manner as you started. For example, if you got clear using 415nm blue or Hybrid light for 15 minutes every other day, decrease your treatments to 15 minutes every three days. If this keeps your breakouts under control, try decreasing treatments again to 10 minutes every four days. Continue in that manner until you find the right number of monthly sessions necessary to stay ahead of your breakouts.
A printed copy of these instructions will be included with your order.
Can I use the lights on other
places besides my face?
Yes, blue and red light therapy is safe and
beneficial for the entire body. The enLux bulbs
are powerful enough to be effective 2-3 feet
away, and this makes treatment of back and body
acne easy and comfortable.
You are treating mild to severe inflammatory acne or cystic acne.
A dermatologist's blue light treatment has already worked for you.
You want the same light you've read about on acne.org or elsewhere or
You want to explore light therapy and use Red light separately for a host of other healing and therapeutic benefits.
Should I buy more than one light?
One light is all you need if you'd like to give light therapy a try without spending a lot. For example, you can set up your light on one side of your desk while you are working (or gaming), then after 10 minutes, just move it to the other side of your desk to cover the other side of your face.
Always short of time? Two lights will allow you to cut your treatment time in half, for example, by treating both sides of your face at the same time. You'll get a discount on any extra lights, and your entire purchase is covered by the 12 week risk-free trial.
What kind of fixture should I get?
enLux LEDs drop in to any standard, open-faced fixture. Inexpensive gooseneck desk lamps are a popular choice.
If you choose a swing-arm lamps for better positioning, be sure to get one that clamps at the joints. The bulbs are heavy (.5 lb) and the standard spring-type lamp will not hold them in position.
If you travel, or if you're buying the light for your teen, the Smith Victor travel clamp lamp ($23.95) is great to have. It is compact and durable and makes it easy to take your light therapy with you anywhere, even just from one room to the next.
